Mobility is part of the Diversify the Core strategy of Baloise, and the aim is to create a profitable business alongside the core insurance and financial services business of today.

In recent years, Baloise Mobility has built up a strong portfolio of start-ups and own ventures in the mobility sector through investments and incubation of own start-ups. This portfolio of companies enables customers to move from A to B in a safe, convenient and sustainable way. One fundamental pillar of the strategy is to connect the service offerings and capabilities of each company to create additional value in the portfolio.

The resulting networked ecosystem will create synergies between the start-ups for service offering and lead generation and via lead transfers and service combinations this will optimise core KPIs such as customer acquisition costs and customer lifetime value from a holistic viewpoint but also for participating companies.

Having an enterprise grade DATA STRATEGY is essential

60 percent to 80 percent of a data scientist`s time is often required for cleaning and organizing data. Another 19 percent of their time is spent collecting datasets. Leaving very little time to refine algorithms and mine data for patterns (the stuff that delivers real value). And by the way, 78 percent of data scientists say these are the least fulfilling tasks.

The more coherent and standardized the data and enabling IT infrastructure across the portfolio is, the easier it becomes to create a fully power network. In the Baloise Mobility ecosystem we have identified different fields of scalable components. These have been developed together with the CTOs of the ventures and experts from Baloise.

Baloise started to evaluate the benefit of a common data model in the area of total costs of ownership of a vehicle. Shared internal data combined with third party information can deliver insights which cannot be developed by one single entity in the community. Solutions like Snowflake are good starting points to test such kind of data models and data sharing. In best case the enriched data can be sold back to the market again. Concrete use cases implemented in this fashion are for example machine learning powered services ranging from predictive maintenance to fraud detection.

Another area identified as beneficial for the ecosystem is the provisioning of basic data-driven services for all ventures. Examples include digital ID/drivers-license checks or API-driven payment solutions. The reuse of services creates economics of scale previously not achievable for individual start-ups. All ventures together have more transactions than each individually. Why not use the purchasing power and Baloise procurement skills to have better deals for all ecosystem players?

Telematic solution and other mobility services like roadside assistance are more classical insurance related shared service candidates for an ecosystem. Especially the data extracted out of telematics for insurance risk models but also maintenance patterns and customer behaviour are learning fields for all – the start-ups and Baloise. With the growing and shared data volume, data scientist can create more insights and new product and service proposals.

We at Baloise Mobility are still in an early phase of making use of the power of data across our ecosystem. Nevertheless, we see high potentials and defined clear ambitions. Enabling a flexible data flow and exchange within the limitations of customer wishes and regulations will be a key success factor differentiating single providers from ecosystem players. Between us - still a long way to go but start small and think big!
